Filipino developer wins int’l tilt with talking computer application

Who ever said that Filipinos are behind when it comes to technology should think again. Just recently one developer proved to the world that Filipinos thrive on innovation and endless possibilities when he was the only Asian chosen as one of the 12 finalists in the recently concluded "Made in Express Contest." He along with six Americans, an Australian, a Canadian, a European and a Pakistani turned their cool ideas into reality.

Roman Canlas, 28, was one of the 12 finalists who made it among 1,500 developers in the "Made in Express Contest," and also the recipient of the "Community Choice award," which was given to the finalist with the most number of votes from the public for his project. The "Made in Express Contest" is a global developer contest organized by Microsoft Corporation to promote the Express Editions of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. The Express Editions are an expansion of the Visual Studio and SQL Server product line to include lightweight, easy-to-use, and easy-to-learn tools for hobbyists, students, and novice developers who want to build dynamic Windows applications, Web sites, and Web services.

According to Canlas, "the great thing about the Express Editions of Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 is that these are free. Aspiring developers and hobbyists like me can experiment on our ideas without making our pockets suffer." The Express products consist of the Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition, a lightweight tool for building dynamic Web sites and Web services; Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition; Visual C# 2005 Express Edition; Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition; and Visual J# 2005 Express Edition, targeted programming tools for students and hobbyists who wish to learn the fundamentals of Windows programming and also the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, a database for building data-driven applications.

Combining speech and animation, "Dr. House", dubbed as the "curmudgeon chat bot," is a Speech Enabled One Word Sentence Completion Test Web Application. It is based on Artificial Intelligence and Speech Recognition that provides psychotherapy analysis based on the user’s reactions and inputs. It is targeted for people who are having behavioral problems and it could also be used to give a clear definition of a person’s character.

"The application is interactive and quite similar to counseling with a real therapist. It shall be the advent of the speaking, responding and thinking application," enthused Roman.

To make use of Dr. House, Microsoft Agent, software technology that enables an enriched form of user interaction that can make using and learning to use a computer, easier and more natural, must first be installed in the user’s computer. From there, users can log in using their personal user name and password. Once the users have encoded their personal profile, Dr. House is ready to psychoanalyze them. Dr. House will be uttering incomplete sentences and as his patient, using the microphone connected to the PC, users will have to complete his sentence with a single word. After 50 questions, the session will end and the user will be redirected to the reports page. Test results will give a clear description of the user’s attitude towards men/women, supervisors at work or at school, as well as that of the family unit.

"Local developers make up an integral part of our business in Microsoft. Their creative talents bring about new products that could benefit individuals, businesses and large sectors. Microsoft is about empowering the Filipino, especially homegrown talents like Roman," stated Jojo Ayson, Senior Product Manager, Business Marketing Organization, Microsoft Philippines.

Canlas has high hopes for his application. He says that Dr. House could be used as part of the hiring process by corporate HRD’s who want to have something that deviates from the pen and paper test. With the upcoming Microsoft .Net 3.0 framework, Dr. House is bound to do more than just analyze according to one-word responses.

"There are a lot of talented Filipinos especially in the field of IT and companies like Microsoft that offer technical support and encouragement to developers contribute a lot to boosting the potential in the country," added Canlas who is part of the Microsoft Developer Network that offers Filipino developers a venue to exchange ideas. The Microsoft Developer Network also provides them with product support and the latest news in the realm of software developers.

The minimum system requirements for using Dr. House is an Internet Explorer version 5, a Windows XP operating system, soundcard, microphone, a set of speakers or headphones and a PC with 500 MHz clockspeed.

The nice thing about Filipino developers is the fact that they share their triumph with the community. Canlas goes beyond being brilliant as he plans to share the ,000 he received from being chosen as the community choice winner to the Cancer Warriors Foundation.

A programmer by day at BDO-Equitable-PCI Bank and a hobbyist by night, Canlas is on the lookout for his next bright idea that he could turn into reality.
